SOLO FRUTAS is a limited edition chapbook of visual art and writing published in Mexico City, in English and Spanish, co-edited with Freya Johnson-Ross.

A missing peach turns a holiday into a tragedy. Polaroid pears dream of love. Workers at a cherry farm stumble on a mystery. A naked woman in an orchard is ravished  by hounds.

It’s hard to speak about fruit without slipping into endless clichés and well-worn jokes, even when you try not to — because fruit has always been a rich source of imagery and imagination for writers and artists. Fruitful, overripe, juicy: we were interested to explore this space, where originality can perhaps be decentred.

When we set out to make the book, we had conversations about colour, fantasy, land, nourishment (rights to these), and wondered what would come back. We got the full spectrum: sexy, weird, horrible, beautiful. Making space for new connections — across disciplines, languages, and ways of seeing — was also central to the impulse behind it.

This multilingual collection of visual art, poetry, and fiction is a ripe, rotting, luscious meditation on the theme of fruit. From an international group of artists and writers, SOLO FRUTAS moves through kitchens, orchards, factories, and skies — some spaces charged with desire and horror, others lush with fun, weirdness and wonder . . .

This book features the work of Manuel Calvillo de la Garza, Lorena González Di Totto, Freya Johnson Ross, Julián Madero Islas, Mariana Paniagua Cortés, Francesco Pedraglio, Sarah de Souza, Jamie Swick, and Marosa di Giorgia.
